Andre Adam Johnson, the older of two siblings, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1957, to the late Grover Adotche Wicks and Geraldine Elizabeth Williams. Andre departed this life peacefully on October 13, 2020. Even though his health was declining, he never complained. The Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved brother as he entered into eternal rest.
Andre was educated in the Philadelphia School District. After graduating high school, Andre
enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. As a young child, one of the family members gave him the nickname of “Wappy,” and ever since then, Andre was better known to all as “Wappy.”
Wappy was an Armed Security Guard and worked at different establishments throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey. He was knowledgeable of the word of God. He was known throughout the neighborhood of Chew and Chelten Avenue. Wappy considered himself a tough guy, but underneath that tough-guy persona, he was a softie at heart. He was generous, and especially when it came to finances, he would always ask do you need any money. He would give you his last dime, not to mention the shirt off his back. He was selfless when it came to giving to others.
Wappy had a broad range of interests and was a curious person and had been so ever since he was a child. In his early years, Wappy practiced martial arts and weight lifting. His passion was learning all he could about the history of African Americans and other cultures through documentaries, and he was an avid reader and self-educated. He loved to debate what he had learned and was excited to share with others.
