Annabelle Crutchfield Obituary

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thy own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6

Ms. Annabelle Crutchfield entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 19, 2022 at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA.  She was born on June 23, 1921, Louisa County Virginia to the late Floyd E. and Jessie C. Crutchfield.  At a young age her family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.   Annabelle was a modest, fashionable and stylish lady. Her two cousins that shared in her care fondly referred to her as “The Diva.” She was witty, humorous, jazzy and had a beautiful endearing smile. She was humble, sincere, and embraced life without complaints.

Annabelle was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. After graduation, she matriculated at Temple University, Philadelphia PA.  She transferred to Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, Ohio and graduated in 1947 with a B.S. in Elementary Education.

Annabelle retired in 1983 from the Philadelphia School District where she was employed for twenty-seven years.  After her retirement, for more than twelve years, she assisted with teaching and directing at the Learning Center of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Annabelle professed Christ at an early age. With her mother and stepfather, that she referred to as her father, she attended Sunday School, Church services and related activities.  A longtime member of Greater Ebenezer Church. Annabelle was a devoted and active member. She was well loved and respected by her Pastor(s) and church members. When speaking about her Church, she spoke in terms of endearment.  Annabelle served both as Secretary and President of the Missionary Society. She served as Treasury of the Willing Workers Organization. She said, “Her mission was to serve God and to support her Church community spiritually and financially.”

In addition to adorning herself with beautiful hats; she wore many working hats in the Philadelphia community. Annabelle was involved with various community-based organizations included but not limited to, The Center for Intergenerational Learning, the Philadelphia Inter-Alumni United Negro College Fund, Temple University Mission of Hope and Center for Learning-Tutoring Program.  A proud Alumni of Wilberforce University, Annabelle served as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, where she recruited many outstanding students for Wilberforce University. A member of Mabel M. Keys Chapter #99 Eastern Star and a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She received many awards and recognitions for her dedication with her work and community service.

In the later years of her life, she resided at Germantown Home, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With grace, she embraced the GTH community. Annabelle was known as ‘the Social Butterfly’.  She participated in arts/ crafts, game day with Bingo, a favorite. She attended celebrations, concerts and movies.  She looked forward to Sunday Church Services and Thursday Bible Study. She engaged her mind with Word find activities, reading of her Bible, and watching her favorite T.V. game shows, and sports. She was well versed in news and current events of today. As a resident, Annabelle continued to engage in her civic duties. She voted in every election and encouraged others to vote. Annabelle was often invited to attend meetings to represent and speak on behalf of her Germantown Home family and friends.  Annabelle cared about the residents, the staff, and enjoyed being in the company her friends.  She said, “Friendship is found in the way that you share.”

Annabelle was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather Clellie Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy: one daughter; Victoria Crutchfield of Tucson Arizona. She also leaves to cherish her memory; a host of devoted cousins, family members and lifetime friends.

Her temperance and patience were built on grace. A joy to sadness a smile to a frown.

We are left remembering her beautiful spirit, as she was a shining light in the lives of all that knew her or that crossed her path.
