George Morton Obituary

George E. Morton, known to his friends as "Smiley," was born in Philadelphia on December 8, 1937, to the late Blanche E. Morton Cannon and Harrison Cannon.  For the first few years of his life he had the great fortune of being raised by his grandparents in Mineral, Virginia, until he was able to move back to Philadelphia permanently around the age of seven.  Those years spent with his grandparents were very memorable, having the time to spend with his cousins, which played a big part in making him the man he became. He was baptized at a very young age in Virginia where he received Jesus Christ as his Savior.  He attended church with his mother until her passing and then joined the family of Wayland Temple Baptist Church.  After joining Wayland Temple Baptist Church he re-dedicated his life to the Lord. He graduated from Murrell Dobbins Vocational and Technical High School in 1957 where he majored in auto mechanics and ran track in a group called the "Flying Four."  Upon graduation he did pursue a career in auto mechanics, but eventually worked for SEPTA as a bus driver and had a stellar record, 35 years no accidents whatsoever. He received numerous commendations and awards for safe driving. In 1983 he married Grace A. Ingraham-Morton. That union lasted 38 years, until his passing. After retiring from SEPTA, he went on to work for the Philadelphia School Board for another eight years. He was also a member of the softball league at Charles Young Post. He enjoyed music, especially jazz, from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.  He also loved to travel and went on many trips and cruises."Pop-Pop," as he was affectionately called, was loved by all of his grandchildren and enjoyed being the proud grandfather, always ready to offer good advice with a touch of wisdom. At the age of 83 he was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He was surrounded by his loving family who are very grateful to have had him in our lives and will cherish and love him forever. Left to cherish his memories are: Wife:  Grace Children:  Tyrone Morton; Karen Morton, who predeceased him; Monique (Samuel) Valtri; Daphne (Armand Sr.) McKissick, who predeceased him; Tracey (Francesco) Barone.Grandchildren:  Tynesia Chantel Morton; Jamie Morton; Alicia (Ronald) Holsey-Gray; Brian (Natasha) Holsey, Jr.; Kevin (Alyssa) Holsey; Tasha Holsey; Armand McKissick, Jr., Chantal (Geoffrey) Bennett; Gracie McKissick; Bianca Barone.
